Mekton campaign 2013
Originally called the Red Impulse Squad (赤インパルス隊), the Impulse Pilots were a dedicated group of pilots, highly physically trained, and employed in defence of humanity.
Originally conceived of in the late 1950s, they were a rogue squadron of pilots without oversight who arrived without warning and fought when necessary against agents and technology of the terrorist organization known as Galactor. Later, in the 1970s, they developed a rapport with International Science Organization scientist, Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, and allowed their actions to be directed by him. When activities by Galactor threatened to destabilize the Van Allen belt, the original Red Impulse unhesitatingly put himself in harm’s way to deliver the necessary payload to protect the planet from ensuing harm, and was killed in action as a result. For most of the remainder of the 70s, the Red Impulse Squad was unheard of, and little is known concerning their activities, however in the 1980s, a new, young pilot took up the mantle of Red Impulse, and with a cadre of elite pilots, again patrolled the skies, taking on new duties, mainly involved in policing and supporting the activities of military organizations around the world, to prevent the abuse of power by those in trusted positions of government, and to provide the much needed muscle to enforce UN regulations which had been lacking until then.
The actual identities of the Red Impulse Squad members were never confirmed, however their public face was represented in the person of their leader, known as Red Impulse. After the second Red Impulse retired from public life, the squad continued to function, but became known as the Impulse Squad.
Since then, the human species has expanded to populate planets all over this quadrant of the galaxy, and the ISO has expanded its field of operations and been renamed once or twice; at this point it is called the Intervessel Science Collective (ISC).
It is no longer feasible for one team of elite pilots to adequately defend all of humanity. For this reason, the Impulse Squad, now calling themselves the Impulse Squadron, under ISC oversight, expanded its recruitment program and now fields agents in multiple jurisdictions. Although individual agents have been sighted occasionally, yet they are at their most effective when in squads of three, or in squadron formations of multiple squads.
The individual groups have identification codes within the structure of their organization, but to the public at large, they are simply the Impulse Squad. Each group of three usually contains a chain of command, including a leader, and the leaders themselves are ranked in a chain of command, in the event that they are required to perform in a squadron or other joint taskforce. The highest ranking leader goes by the name (or title) of Red Impulse, whether male or female; although there is not necessarily a blood connection between this person and the original Red Impulse.
